The City You Wake Up In

Almost every cameo in this section is a borrowing: a studio somewhere liked the silhouette of a ruin and dropped it into a level. Si Thep’s is the other way round. Sithep Adventure was commissioned by the Fine Arts Department — the Thai government body that runs Si Thep Historical Park and shepherded its 2023 World Heritage nomination — as part of a “SITHEP Cultural Metaverse” project, built by the Bangkok studio Lumin Drive, and released free on iOS, Android and PC in early 2025. The custodian of the site made the game about the site.

You play Namo, a present-day boy dumped into the ancient city with no obvious way home, working through fixed-camera corridors of laterite block with a sword. What is striking is where the game’s structure comes from. Its three big stages are the ancient town of Si Thep, Khao Klang Nok, and Khao Thamorrat — which is not a designer’s shortlist but the exact three components UNESCO inscribed as a serial property in 2023. The bestiary is sourced the same way: the stucco reliefs carved around Khao Klang Nai, the dwarf bearer, monkey bearer, giant bearer, lion bearer and ox bearer who appear to hold the monument up, were lifted off the wall and turned into the things that stop you getting past. A Dharmachakra — the Dvaravati “Wheel of the Law,” the same object that fills the site’s museum cases — is a power-up. Hidden collectibles are inscriptions in Pallava script.

There is something fitting in the setup. Si Thep is a city whose water engineering has never been properly reconstructed and whose abandonment nobody can agree on, a place that was still being redrawn by LiDAR in 2023. A game cannot answer any of that. What it can do is hand a thirteen-year-old the same problem the archaeologists have: you are standing inside a thousand-year-old city you do not understand, the people who built it are gone, and the only way out is to work out what everything was for.
